For past years, many homes in US have jumped into solar panels to tap on the solar energy. To some extent, sufficient level of electricity are still needed to power up more home. Will there be time that we can truly own a self-sufficient home that have no reliant on electricity?
Recently I read a newspaper article published in Singapore on a 3 storey "Zero Energy" building that is completely self-sufficient in meeting its power consumption. I'm amazed to learn that this building is full of different green initiative. Its has solar panels at roof top and window covering an area larger than an olympic-sized swimming pools, powerful enough to light up 45 4-rooms apartment per year. Vertical greeneries on the external wall cools the interior temperate naturally down by 12 degree celsius. Lights can be directed into the top floor such that less artificial light is needed.
In a tropical island like Singapore, tapping its strong sunlight for whole year long is definitely a very wise choice. As a result of this green initiative, significant saving can be achieved. Natural ventilation helps to reduce the the usage of air-conditioner by 40%. Total estimated saving on electricity is SGD$84,000.00 per year. With the strong support from government in leading "Zero Energy" initiative, a nation of cleaner air and greener environment has started to flourish and will lead the world into developing more greener "Zero-Energy" high-rising complex for the sake of environmental conservation.
